With research forming the backbone of quality management education, it is no surprise that the new IIMs are giving it all the importance it deserves. "With out this component, B-school graduates have come to realise that the 'real-world' examples taught in their classrooms do not often apply to the Indian corporate context. Research is not a matter of choice, as the reputed global institutions, be it Harvard, Wharton, MIT, Stan ford, among others, have been focusing on this aspect. In India's knowledge-driven economy, it has become an absolute must for every institute to make investments in the area, and recruit faculty who are updated with global trends," says Janat Shah, director, IIM Udaipur that has 26 PhD students across disciplines and 50 research faculty. Most of the six new IIMs (located in Udaipur, Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Trichy and Rohtak) that were started after 2010 to expand quality management education in the country, have been hard at work trying to improve their research ecosystem over the years.
