With the declaration.of the board results, the CBSE will conduct the class X, and XII supplementary exams in July 2023. The board decided to change the nomenclature of the 'compartment' exam to 'supplementary' exam to include three categories of students whose goal is to either pass or improve their scores. The change is also guided by NEP 2020 that stipulates the need to provide more opportunities for improvement.

Clearing the confusion

Elaborating on the intricacies of the exam and the confusion surrounding its nomenclature, Sanyam Bhardwaj, controller of examinations, CBSE, explains, "Earlier, only those students who were appearing in five subjects and were failing in one subject in class XII, and two subjects in class X were placed in the compartment category and an opportunity was provided to them in July, for which the board was holding an exam. Since only students placed in the compartment category were appearing in the July exam, hence it was called compartment examination."
"But in 2021, the Spe Board decided to change some of its policies, where in if students have passed all five subjects but would like to improve their score in one subject in class XII and two subjects in class X, they could also take their exam/s in July. There is also a third category of students who may have a skill subject as a sixth subject, in class X / class XII which can be used to replace and pass the students if they fail in one of the Main subjects, except for the language paper. For instance, a skill subiect like Artificial ligence can replace Mathishe student fails to qualify in Maths. In such cases, Maths will become the sixth subject, and since it is a crucial subject for students' higher education prospects, they can appear in the July exam to improve their performance in Maths while being declared pass. All three categories of students can appear in the same exam in July which made it necessary to change the nomenclature of the exam to supplementary exam, "Bhardwaj adds.

Two versus one subject

As to why students can appear for the exam in two subjects in class X and only one subject in class ULTS 2023 ecial XII, Bhardwaj puts it down to the need to complete the entire supplementary exams within one week despite the various permutations and combinations of subjects. "All candidates of class XII appearing for one subject will take their exam on the same day. Since the class X students are new to the board exam system, they are permitted to appear for the supplementary exam in two their combination of is such that the exam can be completed in one week's time," he says.

The process of registering students for the supplementary exams this year will start in June 2023. Students placed in the compartment category will be given a maximum of three chances to clear their papers. "If for instance, a student has been placed in the compartment category in 2023 main examination, he/she will get the first chance in July 2023 and the other two in March 2024 (when the next main exam is held), and July 2024 (when the compartment exam is conducted). If in case, the student fails despite these chances, he/she will have to reappear in all the five subjects," Bhardwaj says.
