The University of Delhi (DU) has notified that it will conduct examina tions in online Open Book and physical mode. While the March/April exams will be held as an online Open Book Exam (OBE), the May exams will be conducted in the phy sical mode. The official notifi cation clarifies that semester I, III, and V or odd semester exams will be conducted in OBE mode, whereas semes ter II, IV, and VI or the even se mester examinations will be conducted in physical mode.

RS Rawat, dean, Exami nations, DU, says, "First se mester exams will be in the third week of March in online OBE mode once physical classes disperse on March 10. Following government direc tives and reopening of the campus for physical classes, the first-year students will be expected to attend only 17-18 days of offline classes. Physi cal exams for this group of students would have requi red days of proper planning, involving paper printing, answer script preparation etc. Online OBE seems like the best option for them."

The physical exams will begin from May onwards, which is when the even se mesters begin. "The final and second year students who are already attending of fline classes will be attuned to the idea of physical ex ams," Rawat adds.

DU is prepared to conduct OBE as this would be the se venth such exam in online mode. "The first OBE was started in August 2020, follo wed by a series of exams in

2020 and 2021, some of which provided the second chance to students," Raway says.

Talking about the recent exam patterns, vice-chancel lor, DU, Yogesh Singh, expla ins that the first year stu dents are being given all the flexibility they need with the option to attend online/offli ne classes prior to their online OBE. But second year and third year students must at tend offline classes which can help them get used to the physical mode in May. All stu dents are being given suffici ent time to prepare for the va rious formats," he adds.

The physical reopening of the campus and the online OBE has however become a contentious issue for the stu dents. "Principals have been asked to exercise discretion to ensure students are not in convenienced. Consequent ly, we are not going to make attendance an issue," says Manoj Sinha, principal, Aryb hatta College, DU, adding, the college is making arran gements to provide lectures in hybrid and video mode for students who are abroad or in different parts of the country.
