With the CBSE introducing its counselling facility for students in January this year, experts question if it was being conducted at an opportune moment. It is tantamount to last-minute firefighting since students could be under severe stress and may not absorb the guidance with any serious intent, they claim. While there are suggestions that the counselling could be held year round or at least in the last three-four months but looking at the availability and accessibility needs of the students, there is still a 45 day window period before the exam commences," reasons Dr Jitendra Nagpal, consulting senior psychiatrist and programme director, Expressions India- The National Life Skills and School Wellness Programme.

Counselling is being conducted with IVRS (Interactive voice response systems) along with podcasts instead of just one-to-one and telephonic counselling. While the initiative used to start in February earlier, the services are now being offered in January keeping in view the commencement of the exam from February 15. Sanyam Bhardwaj, controller of Examinations, CBSE, says, The board has been providing a robust counselling system for over two decades both before the boards and post the declaration of the results. For the greater part of the year, most schools have counsellors to guide the students, but when the students are in the final stages of their preparation, the boards advice to them will have a more meaningful impact. So far, over 5,000 students have benefitted from the counselling services, though the numbers are likely to increase as the exams draw near.
