To control cramming in schools, promote expe riential learning and maximise the use of textbook knowledge in real-life, the CBSE has formulated new Le arning Standards Fram eworks. "When the Board de cided to initiate competency based education, teachers and school leaders were al- most clueless, to begin with. The stakeholders needed sup- port to introduce competency- based learning. The board at- tempts to delineate NCERT Learning Outcomes and facili- tate teaching-learning in the classroom. NCERT had deve loped learning outcomes for classes I to XII and we are also developing a framework for classes VI to XII," says Joseph Emmanuel, director, Acade mics, CBSE. "The first step is to align the curriculum to defi ned learning outcomes," adds Emmanuel, elaborating that this will be accomplished wit hout changing the curriculum.

The CBSE in collaboration with Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, has developed the Learning Standards Fram- ework documents for Science, Mathematics, Social Science, English and Hindi for classes IX-X.
