The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in collaboration with the tech giant, Meta, aims to train 10 lakh teachers and more than 1 crore students in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the next three years. As part of this partnership, Meta has already provided a curriculum on Digital Safety, online well-being, VR, and AR.
Speaking to Education Times, Biswajit Saha, director, CBSE, says, "AR and VR will be introduced as a skill subject for classes VI to VIII and it will be integrated into STEM education till class XII. The vision is to democratize and universalize STEM education. The students will get to learn the theory part and will also have projects and internships. We are also planning to have lab experiments to make learning more immersive and experiential. In addition to this, students will also be encouraged to leverage AR and VR in entrepreneurship. Some of the topics that will be covered are; Digital Etiquettes, Well Being, Digital Citizenship, Digital Footprints, Cyber Safety, and Security. Students would also be given the knowledge to take care of passwords."

Joseph Emmanuel, director, CBSE (Academics), says, "All the technical aspects related to AR and VR at an age-appropriate level will be taught to the students in a well-defined way in this emerging knowledge domain. Also, the students will be made to understand both the theoretical as well as practical aspect of the new technology and the marks scored by the students will be added to their internal assessment."

Manav Subodh, co-founder, 1M1B Foundation which is the implementing agency, hopes the initiative will help to increase the technical workforce by introducing students to emerging technologies. "The simplest form of introducing AR is by involving the students to learn it. AR, VR, AI, and ML are the subjects that must be included in the curriculum. NEP 2020 emphasizes immersive, visual and experiential learning and this move will cut across the infrastructural challenges" he adds.
