“Nursing" word is directly meant for caring.

Nursing is a popular profession in the healthcare industry. Especially after the covid19 pandemic. Nursing deals with various aspects of patient care. A nurse is an individual trained to serve the people who need medical assistance. Nurses always have to monitor the condition of the patients and administer prescribed medicines at regular intervals. They also assist medical specialists.

A career in nursing is a suitable option for an individual who has the zeal and interest to serve the mankind. The individual who believed in the curing of medically ill people and can work in hard conditions for long hours may choose nursing as a career for himself/herself.

Courses Available in Nursing

Diploma Courses in Nursing

  • ANM (Auxiliary Nursing & Midwife) –  Auxiliary Nurse Midwife/ Health Worker.
    Eligibility: 10th class passed with 45% and comply the age between 17 – 35 years. There is a provision of entrance tests for this course conducted by the nursing entrance board.
    Duration: 18 months.
    ANM course provides training which is related to the needs of the people living in rural areas especially children, mothers and old persons. 
  • GNM (General Nursing & Midwife) – 

             Eligibility: 10+2 with Biology, Physics, and Chemistry

             Duration: 3 1/2 years.
             GNM makes a candidate, General Nurse, who works as a team member of a health care group and holds first-level positions in both the hospitals and other such places.  

UG Degree courses in Nursing

  • B. Sc – Basic (Bachelor of Science in Nursing – Basic) - 
    Eligibility for Bachelor of Science in Nursing : 10+2 with Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
    Duration of Bachelor of Science in Nursing  : 3 to 4 years. 
  • B. Sc – Post Basic (Bachelor of Science in Nursing – Post Basic) –   2 yrs
  • B. Sc – Distance (Bachelor of Science in Nursing – Distance) – 3 yrs

PG Degree courses in Nursing

  • M. Sc (Master of Science in Nursing) – Master of Science in Nursing

           Eligibility for Master of Science in Nursing: B.Sc Nursing.

             Duration of Master of Science in Nursing: 2 years.
             M.Sc Nursing course enables a nurse to become nurse specialists, administrators, consultants, educators and researchers in a wide                         variety of professional settings.

Doctoral courses in Nursing

  • M. Phil (Master of Science in Nursing) – 1 yr (Full time)
  • M. Phil (Master of Science in Nursing) – 2 yr (part-time)
  • Ph.D. (Doctor in Philosophy) – 3 to 5 yrs

 

Eligibility Requirement to become Nurse

  • Students must have passed 10+2 from a recognized institution with PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). However, for diploma courses In Nursing, candidates must have passed 10+2 with any combination of subjects. 

  • The basic eligibility requirement for nursing is to have a minimum of 45% marks in 10+2 or equivalent ( It varies from college to college or university to university).

How to Become a Nurse in India?

1. B.Sc. Nursing

To be eligible to join B.Sc. Nursing a Bachelor degree one should be 10+2 with Biology, Physics, and Chemistry as the main subject with 50% marks for some highly rated colleges providing this course.

Steps to Becoming a Nurse: 

Step 1
Interested candidate has to appear in an entrance test conducted by the various state and Independent medical educational bodies to admit candidates in various teaching institutions attached with it according to the rank of the candidate in the entrance exam.

These exams are usually held in the month of May-June and consists of Objective type questions based on the subject of relevant subjects the results of these exams are generally out by June/July 

However, some colleges also give admission on the basis of % of marks obtained in the qualifying class

Step 2
After completing this 3 - 4 year of course in which one has to go through all the major aspects of the field of study-Apart from the theoretical part, Nurses also go through practical training courses in the attached Hospitals- one can opt. for some job is private or state-run Nursing homes or Hospital as a junior/Assistant Nurse.
