Will FYUP reduce the importance of PG programmes

FYUP with its strong research component and experiential learning will make the transition to the PG program more seamless, academics claim

The Union Education Ministry is looking to start the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP) at universities across the nation. With multiple entries and exit options, it may undermine postgraduate (PG) programs.

However, Yogesh Singh, vice-chancellor, University of Delhi (DU) says FYUP would strengthen PG programmes. "FYUP will supplement and add value to PG programs, as students who choose to complete four years of UG education would be more inclined towards research and higher education. They will also be eligible for the one-year PG programme. Those who opt for three years of UG education will get an honor's degree and be eligible for the 2-year PG program. We are looking at a total of five years of UG and PG education that can either be pursued in the new 4+1 format or the existing 3+2 format."

Freedom of choice

Singh adds, "The aim is to break the rigidity of the existing curriculums and give students the option to exit after three years or follow a research track in the final year of their FYUP to pursue one year of master's program. FYUP will encourage a seamless transition to PG and Ph.D. programmes."

Singh further tells that the DU Academic Council has decided the framework for FYUP in terms of semesters and credits while the Board of Studies will decide the courses. "Students of UG and PG programs will have the choice to undertake courses at neighboring colleges/universities or opt for SWAYAM'S MOOCs, Coursera, edX, etc depending on the quality of content," says the former vice-chancellor of Delhi Technological University (DTU).

"We still have time to implement the revamped PG curriculum, as currently, the focus is more on the FYUPS where enrollments are slated to begin from the new academic year," Singh says.

Knowledge integration

The FYUP and one-year PG program will give students the flexibility to choose myriad courses, says Lingaraja Gandhi, vice-chancellor, Bengaluru City University. "Quality of the PG program will be enhanced as FY UP will provide an opportunity to earn credits through the UGC's Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), and engage in internships, projects, and research dissertations in line with NEP 2020. Students can acquire 40% of the total are through online courses anytime and from anywhere. Such options will ensure students do not drop out, as they can change streams not only in the same institutions but acquire credits from other institutions as well."
He adds that FYUP and master's programs will be integrated more than ever before as skill components and ability enhancement of students are integrated into the syllabi right from the first year of the UG program. "Preparation for master's programs begins from the first year of UG education with a focus on core learning, allied learning (from sister disciplines), and open learning, which in NEP parlance is called program discipline, discipline elective, and open electives respectively. These will ensure that PG students have critical and analytical thinking skills."
