ChatGPT, a generative pre-trained transformer developed by OpenAI, is one of the many large language models that have popped up in the last decade. Its sheer diversity of uses from generating summaries to translating text to solving mathematical problems and holding human like conversations, will bring a ripple effect on the education sector.
Al language models such as ChatGPT are disrupting the way we create and consume knowledge, warranting a multitude of reactions. While some educators advocate for a strict ban on using ChatGPT, others are open to modifying their pedagogy to incorporate new advancements in technology. Here we have discussed how the AI-language model will help in enhancing online learning and teaching.
Instant feedback is important
Whether synchronous or asynchronous, ChatGPT has a promising role in creating a personalised learning experience for both online learning environments. When a group of learners learn at the same time, for example by logging in to a Zoom meeting, it is referred to as synchronous learning. By contrast, taking a self-paced, pre-recorded online course would be classified as asynchronous learning. Based on their existing knowledge base and pace of learning, students can use the tool to develop a deeper understanding of any topic by asking questions, summarising tests and creating practice tests to assess learning. Students can also seek instant feedback, thereby identifying and correcting mistakes as they go.
Enhancing accessibility
A key advantage of online learning is that it proliferates ac- cess to education by breaking geographical and temporal barriers. Here, Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT have the potential to amplify inclusion and accessibility for people with visual, hearing and mobility impairments through features like text-to-speech conversion and providing audio descriptions of visual content. It can help learners feel secure by simplifying complex texts, expanding on short sentences, practising conversations, and correcting errors.
Engagement and interaction
Another helpful role of ChatGPT will be in creating quizzes, case lesson plans, and personalised feed- back, leading to giving more free time to class teachers or instructors. The saved time can be invested in improving curriculum design. So using ChatGPT will enhance classroom engagement. Using it as a debate sparring partner or designing activities like writing an episode of 'Friends' are some of the creative uses of the tools in the classroom.
While it is too soon to decide whether the net effect will be positive or negative, it is safe to assume that, if used responsibly, ChatGPT can potentially transform the future of education in the country.
