As per the reports, the National Testing Agen cy (NTA) will be provi ding two attempts instead of four to the aspirants planning to take JEE Main exams this year. This decision would complete the admission pro cess in lesser time and ensure the timely beginning of the academic sessions across Engineering colleges throug hout the country. NTA has in troduced four attempts for JEE Mains in 2021, due to rest rictions imposed by Covid.

Speaking to Education Ti mes, Partha Halder, head of Chemistry department, FII TJEE, says, "Reducing the at tempts to crack JEE Mains from four to two from this year, wo uld be a good decision. Four at tempts delayed JEE Advanced schedule, which further delay ed the new academic cycle."

For instance, if exams for the first attempt are conducted in the month of April this year, then exams for the second at tempt will take place in May end, which would clash with the class XII board exams as they would also be conducted in the month of April and May, adds Halder.

"Preparing four sets of qu estion papers distorted the dif ficulty level and the homoge neity of the questions. Altho ugh it is a percentile-based process, still too many papers make the process unfair to the aspirants. Ideally, the compe titive exam should only be conducted once a year, so that every student is judged on the same set of questions at the same time and as per the same parameters. Last year, as four attempts were given to aspi rants to clear JEE main exam,

NTA had to declare 18 stu dents as rank one holders," explains Halder.

Dev Bhatia, 19, from Mum bai who will appear for JEE ex am this year, says, "I dropped a year after class XII to prepare for JEE. I attempted four times last year. During my prepara tion when there were two at tempts, I noticed that the com petition was comparatively lo wer as compared to preparing when four attempts were avai lable." Kritika Bhatt, 18, from Delhi NCR, who is set to appear for JEE Mains this year, says, "The decision to allow four at tempts was aimed to help students during Covid. Our batch should also have been given four attempts as we were confined to our home."
