Schools to focus on lab work before CBSE boards in April

Students and teachers. heaved a sigh of relief as the CBSE announced the fresh date of board ex- ams beginning on April 26. With sufficient time in hand, the focus now is on comple- ting the laboratory work, re- mediation classes for stu- dents who require support and practising writing wit- hin a stipulated time.

CBSE Examinations. Controller Sanyam Bhard- waj says, "While deciding on the Term II exam dates, our biggest concern was to give enough time to stu- dents to understand diffi- cult concepts and prepare for the exams. The Covid si- tuation is improving, and states are reopening scho- ols, from next week on wards, children will be able to attend school regularly and seek guidance from the ir teachers."

Since most students had no exposure to the laborato- ry work, CBSE wants scho- ols to help them. "Students will now get hands-on trai ning in labs; they will have enough time to attend

practical classes for Science subjects. There is no alter- native to practical lab trai- ning. This will better prepa- re them for college and later in their professional lives, too. Class X students will continue to be in the school system for the next two ye- ars, but those in class XII should get an opportunity to bridge the learning gap be- fore they enter the universi- ty system." To ensure that students are able to finish answering the question paper on time, most schools are planning to train students with sample papers. "For the past two years, children have been writing from home, comple ting the assignments, scan ning and sending them. As opposed to classwork, there was no time limit at home to complete the assignments, so parents were not able to monitor that part. In scho ols, they do the classwork so they are in the habit of wri ting within the time limit," says Veena Shrivastava, principal, Gopi Birla Memo rial School, Mumbai.

"When children return to offline classes, we will focus on lab work and remedial classes; they will be prioriti sed," says Jyothi Menon, he ad of school, Ekya School ITPL, Bengaluru. Students are also relieved that they will have enough time to revi se and plug the gaps. "Al most 90% of our Term II sylla bus was completed by No vember, but it was done in a hurry, and students were ab sorbed in preparing for Term I exams. Now we will have enough time to revise and we will be better prepa red for the Term Il ex ams, says Tavisha Sethi, class X student of The Shri Ram School, Delhi.
