NMC will release a revised seat matrix for NEET UG 2024 counselling which may increase the number of medical seats

After the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced NEET UG 2024 re-test results recently it was found that the total number of perfect scores has dipped from as many as 67 to 61. This has resulted in more students scoring marks between 680 to 710, which has increased the competition to get admission to the desired medical college. Experts warn that the cut-off marks for NEET UG 2024 will be much higher than the NEET UG 2023, making the aspirants anxious. Many students are considering repeating their attempt or planning to opt for a private medical college.

Merit-based counselling

Dr B Srinivas, secretary, National Medical Commission (NMC), says the counselling process is done by a standard software made by National Informatics Centre (NIC) which analyses the data of top rankers. However, there are likely chances that students may not get a seat in their desired.colleges due to more number of high scorers. He says that a comparison should not be made with the previous years counselling results as the counselling process is fully automated. The ministry and the NMC have no role in the allotment of the seats, as they only provide colleges based on The ranks or merits given by the NTA. The counselling process is completely automated and is merit-based. We cannot compare the college allotments from the counselling 2024 with the NEET UG 2023 allotment. It is not a fair comparison, rather it needs to be compared with the students participating in the current year. There will not be any major change in the allotment of medical colleges, however, the cut-off score will skyrocket from 610 mark in 2023 to the expected figure of 645 in 2024, says Parijat Mishra, head counselling division, Allen Career Institute Kota, Rajasthan. According to our analysis, the NEET UG cut-off for MBBS courses will begin at 645 marks and counselling will be closed between 645 to 652 marks for general category students on all India counselling. We are expecting around 30,000 to 35,000 students to get seats in the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) counselling for MBBS courses. Last year, students with 610 marks received a rank of around 23,500. This year, the score range has increased by 40-50 marks, this happened because of the easiest question paper in the last 26 years. The NTA is gradually reducing the difficulty level of question papers for NEET-UG to reduce the stress and pressure from school students, says Mishra. The MCC might close the counselling rounds at 640 to 635 marks for BDS programmes, Mishra adds. Meanwhile, the NMC will soon release a revised seat matrix for the NEET UG 2024 counselling. Some states have increase seats by establishing new medical colleges. or by adding new seats to the existing colleges. This can increase the total number of seats by 4,000 to 5,000 across the country which will add around 700 to 1000 more seats under the 15% of the All India Quota required for MCC counselling. Aspirants with a rank of around 50,000 might be able to be admitted into top private medical colleges such as Christian Medical College, Vellore, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, St Johns Medical College, PSG Coimbatore and more. Students with 60,000 to 65,000 ranks can try for admission in the BDS, Nursing and other programmes at these campuses, adds Mishra.

Increasing numbers

Due to the high cut-off this year, many aspirants might choose to write the exam again next year. Dr Srinivas says, The number of repeat attempters might increase, however, it will depend upon the measures that the reform committee will suggest to NTA. There are chances of unfamiliar exam patterns in the coming years. The pattern can be similar to JEE or a CBT format might get introduced.
