Reducation in marks will have a cascading effect in the ranks

Around 4.2 lakh students who appeared for the NEET UG 2024 exam on May 5, 2024, and ticked option 1 as the right answer in the Physics question paper lost five marks after NTA re-revised the marks and announced the merit list according to the Supreme Court (SC) ruling. The SC decision was based on the IIT Delhi expert committee, which recommended that only one of the options for a Physics question should be considered valid. Earlier, several aspirants challenged 'Question Number 29 in the Physics section of the NEET exam, alleging that the list of top-ranked students could change depending on how this particular question was marked. The earlier edition of the NCERT Physics book might have had a typographical error that changed the meaning of the sentence, which could have led to possible confusion for students who studied only from NCERT books. Meanwhile, an expert (on the condition of anonymity) blamed the NTA for causing time loss to students. NTA failed to draft the NEET question paper methodically to eliminate unqualified students from the competition. This is particularly concerning given that the total number of MBBS seats is limited while more than 23 lakh students appeared for the exam, said the expert.

Reasonable Solution

The confusion was because of the typographical error in the old version of the NCERT Physics book, says Akshay Saxena co-founder, Avanti Fellow. The old edition of the NCERT book had a typographical error, which read All instead of most atoms of an element are stable. If you see statement number two of the question, then according to the old version of the NCERT book, Atoms of each element are stable seems like a correct statement. Aspirants who had coaching support would have known the correct answer but aspirants who did selfstudies would have gone by the NCERT book, adds Saxena. However, factually and scientifically only statement one is the correct answer, he adds. Furthermore, I believe that either ignoring the question or awarding full marks for both sets of answers would have been the reasonable solution, says Saxena. The number of toppers in the NEET-UG 2024 has come down to 17 from 61, with only one answer being considered correct, those who had chosen the other option have now lost five marks (four for the wrong answer and one negative mark). Causing a cascading effect on ranks, the decision will impact the scores of 4.2 lakh candidates, including 44 who achieved 720/720. Saxena says, The petition was filed by several aspirants, the error could have a more significant impact on students ranked around 50,000, who might lose the chance to secure a seat in a government medical college. From a student's perspective, the decision turned out to be unfair. But once the issue was brought before the court, I am unsure if any other legal resolution would have been possible.
