Jnanadabhiram Barooah Law College, popularly known as J.B. Law College (JBLC) came into existence in the year 1969. The College was named after the name of Jnanadabhiram Borooah, a well known personality in the legal field of Assam and the first Principal of the first Law College of Assam. Eminent educationalist late Golap Chandra Choudhury (1969-1972), the first principal, was the key-person in the establishment of the college. The JBLC is one of the leading Law Schools in North East India, imparting legal education since its inception in the year 1969. Presently the College is permanently affiliated to the Gauhati University and recognized by the Bar Council of India. It is also registered with the University Grants Commission. This prestigious College, JB Law College, is the only Law College in the North-East assessed by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body of UGC and was awared Grade-B in the month of November, 2015, for its pursuits to the legal education. Students from the entire North-Eastern region, apart from Assam come to this College for legal education. It is worth mentioning that Justice K.M. Lahiri, former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice B.L. Hansaria, former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court and former Judge of Supreme Court of India, Justice T.C. Das, former Judge of Gauhati High Court, Justice T.N. Singh, former Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court, were amongst the galaxy of distinguished teachers, who served in the College. Justice A. H. Saikia, now serving as chairperson, Meghalaya Human Rights commission, former Judge, Gauhati High Court and (retd.) Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court and J&K High Court, served as a teacher as well as Principal of the College, Shri Chinmoy Choudhury, Advocate General, Assam, served as a teacher in the college. Presently the College is offering 3 year LL.B. / LL.B. (Hons.), 5 Year B.A. LL.B (Hons.) and LL.M. Courses. The Objectives of the College Interalia are • Pursuit of legal knowledge and development of personality of the students to serve the society by developing skills in advocacy, legal services, legislations, reforms etc. • Learning of law and legal processes and their role in nation building. • The College is determined to sustain the status and academic stature in the field of legal education for which it was established on popular demand of the society.
