About Himalayan Pharmacy Institute
Himalayan Pharmacy Institute is the pioneer institution conducting Pharmacy courses in the State of Sikkim. It is an independent, co-educational and self financed institution offering Diploma, Undergraduate, Post graduate and Doctor of Philisophy (PhD) pharmacy programmes.
The Institute is situated in Majitar, along the side of the NH 10, 4kms ahead of Rangpo, the border town of West Bengal and Sikkim and 74 kms away from Siliguri, West Bengal. From Majitar 36kms remain towards Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The nearest Railway station is New Jalpaiguri and the airport is Bagdogra.
HPI had a humble beginning way back in 1990 in Fiveways, Deorali with the two year Diploma in Pharmacy course. Owing to the popularity of the diploma course, in 1997 the four year degree course, B. Pharm was started. It was in the year 2000 that the institute was shifted to it’s present location in Majitar. From the new spread-out campus the first batch of B. Pharm graduated in 2001. Thereafter, the Institute reached new heights in 2005, when it started M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics followed by master degree programmes in Pharmacognosy (2007), Pharmacology (2008) and Pharmaceutical Analysis (2012). The Institute reached another milestone in 2017, after starting Doctor of Philisophy (PhD).
Himalayan Pharmacy Institute has been approved by Govt. of Sikkim, AICTE, PCI and is affiliated to Sikkim University. It is accredited by ISO 9001:2008 and recognized by UGC u/s 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956. The Governing Body of HPI comprises of eleven members including Govt. nominee, AICTE nominee and University members along with the Director, Principal, Faculty and Student of the Institute. HPI has a Teachers Council comprising of all the teaching staff of the Institute which helps in the monitoring of the academic and administrative curriculum. This is further supported by 18 various committees like the Disciplinary and Anti-ragging Committee, Hostel Management Committee, Training and Counseling Committee, Instrument Maintenance Committee, Seminar & Workshop Committee, Sports Committee, Research Committee, Gender Sensitization Committee etc.
Apart from the well facilitated practical laboratories, the Institute boasts of having an air-conditioned instrument room packed with sophisticated instruments like UV, FTIR, HPLC, U-HPLC, GC, HPTLC, AAS, TGA, DSC, PCR, Nano Zeta Sizer, Flash Purification System, CO2 Incubator, Lagendroff Heart Perfusion System, Auto Analyzer, Particle Size Analyzer, Microwave Synthesizer, QSAR Software, Bilayer Rotary Tablet Machine, etc.
For PG project work, the Institute conducts the animal experiments as per the guidelines of CPCSEA and is approved by IAEC. Moreover, the Institute has set up it’s own Animal Ethics Committee to minimize unnecessary animal usage and to ensure proper care and maintenance to the experimental animals.
HPI also houses a sprawling Medicinal Plants Garden and a digital library. For students’ accommodation separate hostels for girls and boys are available.
With it’s talented and motivated student body and accomplished faculty, HPI is a leading research institute in the North –East region. The Institute has received several research and seminar grants from AICTE, CSIR, DST and ICMR. In the last 26 years more than 600 research papers have been published and presented at various national and international conferences.
