About The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda

Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is one of the premier universities of India located in the city of Baroda in Gujarat state. It was originally formed as the Baroda College of Science in 1881 and it became a University in 1949 after the independence of the country. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is named after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the former ruler of Baroda. It is popularly known as M.S.University (MSU). The Maharaja Sayajirao's grandson Sir Pratapsinghrao Gaekwad who founded the Maharaja Sayajirao University and settled the trust as desired by his grandfather. This Trust known as Sir Sayajirao Diamond Jubilee and Memorial Trust exists today also and caters to the educational and other needs of the people of the former state of Baroda. All courses offered by the University have English as the medium of instruction.  However, the courses for specialization in Indian Languages have the the respective language as the medium of instruction. For Example, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with Gujarati/ Hindi/ Marathi /Sanskrit etc. is taught in the respective language. The University has international reputed faculties of  Fine Arts and  Performing Arts. They offer conventional degree programs in Sculpture, Painting, Applied Arts, Art History and Aesthetics, Museology, Vocal/ Instrumental Music, Bharat  Natyam/ Kathak Dance, Dramatics.

Chetan Balwadi - It is a laboratory nursery school of the department of Human Development & Family Studies. It serves preschool age children Using a developmentally appropriate, play based program.

Experimental School - It is a Gujarati Medium School offering education from Std. I to XII.

Continuing/Adult Education Center - The Centre offers a long-term courses in the fields of Social Sciences, Commerce, Science, Management, Social Work, Interiors, Hospitals and Hospitality.

AICS Training Centre - All India Civil Services Training Centre runs a full time course for the pre-examination training for the Civil Services.

Oriental Institute - It is a world renowned research institute involved in collection, preservation, publication and other works.

Microbiology Department & Biotechnology Centre - It offers the M.Sc. Biotechnology Course in addition to the master's course in Microbiology.

Facilities

Hostels - The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has one of the largest Hostel Campuses in the western India. 12 Boys Hostels and 4 Girls Hostels are spread over the area of approximately 100 acres. All the students residing in the Hostels are provided with minimum facilities like a bed, a cupboard, a table and a chair in the room individually. All the Hostels are equipped with automatic gas fired hot water boilers facility, which provides hot water during the winter season. Hostels are also equipped with a dining hall, a common hall , Mike system facility etc.

Hansa Mehta Library - The Library is housed in a modular structure building having different sections. The total built up area of the Library is 80,025 sq. ft. Reading Room of 10,600 sq. ft. which can accommodate about 1100 readers at a time and is open to readers from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm i.e. 14 hours a day throughout the year except National holidays. It is situated in the whole North Side of the building, in order to have a continuous natural light throughout the year. Out of 14 constituent Libraries under the University Library System, 8 Libraries offer Library operations through a smart card using bar code technology are fully automated.Circulation Section is one of the prominent sections, which facilitates the users to borrow books for their home reading on the basis of their category of patron privilege. In order to render assistance and support from other Libraries to facilitate them, Smt. Hansa Mehta Library is actively engaged in providing and offering Inter Library Loan facility to its clientèle and clientèle of other Libraries too, by way of effective Inter Library Loan service. This facility is extended to all the category of patrons. Library also provides on request, to any distant user, photocopy / hard-copy / soft-copy of the document on their way of demand without violating the copyright and IPR. Presently, University Library System in all subscribes to 815 print journals excluding gratis out of which Smt. Hansa Mehta Library subscribes to more than 451 journals out which 60% are foreign and approximately 200+ are received as gratis. The University Library is equipped with a well equipped Air-conditioned Seminar Room with internet, multi media, wireless audio system.

Computer Centre - Computer Centre has been helping researchers in their complex data analysis required for the research. Internet and other facilities provided at Computer Centre have been used by teachers and research scholars of various faculties for their research and teaching work. The online journals available under the UGC Infonet Project as well as the AICTE Indest-consortium are accessed at the centre facilitating research work. SURFLAND Cyber Café of the Centre is a centralized facility for the Internet Access.

Research Activities - Large number of sophisticated state-of-the-art equipments are provided by the University to support research and higher level learning in various departments/faculties. Substantial research work having societal / public impact like Check dams, (Civil Engineering) Muscle Type (Zoology), Existence of Buddhist culture in Gujarat (Archaeology), Agro-based research (1 patent, Microbiology), process for development of electrical contact material (1 patent filed jointly with DST and Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering) has been granted new drugs and formulations (Pharmacy) etc. Many teachers regularly get invitation to present their research work/ chairing sessions at international conferences/ workshops for their work in frontiers of their respective fields. Large numbers of national conferences/ workshops / seminars are organized by the University every year. Significant numbers of teachers are reviewers/ editor of reputed national and international journals.

University Health Centre - The University Health Centre is a Primary Health Centre, which provides basic medical and para-medical services to the staff and students of the University. The services covered are consultative, investigative, preventive and curative type, including for Malaria, Gastroenteritis, Vaccination, Drug abuse and S.T.D. etc.

Awards - More than 200 gold medals are awarded to felicitate front rankers and special achievers during our annual convocation which is a very regular prestigious feature of our University.

Physical Education -  Physical Education and Sports are an integral part of General Education. This department with one Director and seven Assistant Director (5 Men & 2 Women) and a Hockey Coach arose general consciousness of health among students and select and train capable to represent the University at state, national and international sports. Amongst them are Shri Ansuman Gaekwad, Shri Kiran More, Shri Atul Bedade, Shri Nayan Mongia represented the country in cricket, Shri Salim Ginwala and Kum. Lata George for the world University games in Football and Table Tennis. Kum. Trishla Singh and Shri Davinder Singh won gold medal in the All India Inter University Swimming and Athletics. Beside this University Cricket, Kho-kho (women), Hockey and Football teams won the All India Inter University Championship. This department also looks after the day to day maintenance of the swimming pool, gymnasium and other out and indoor facilities for the entire student community.

Auditorium - C.C Mehta Auditorium has been effectively used by the University and the other Institutions for academic, cultural, social or the business purposes since its establishment.

Guest House - The University Guest House is located in the heart of the University Campus, just besides the Vice Chancellor's Bungalow. It provides comfortable facilities for staying on the campus. It has total 30 rooms with different types of comforts.

Placement -  Average yearly student Intake  during last five years for various degree programs is more than 35,000 Presently there are about 82 Professors, 185 Readers, 480 Lecturers and 431 honorary research members working on the campus. Comprehensive academic range and converge along with vibrant Industry academic Interface is the central strength of our University, Large number of campus interviews and direct recruitment processes conducted by several Indian and International bodies reflects quality of our products.
