About The National Law Institute University - NLIU Bhopal
National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal is State University specialising in legal education, and research. The National Law Institute University (NLIU) was established by the Act No. 41 of the State Legislature of Madhya Pradesh in 1997. NLIU is recognized by University Grants Commission and the Bar Council of India. NLIU is one of the most reputed legal institutions and has been rated consistently as one of the best law Universities in the country. NLIU has been established with objectives of advancing, disseminating learning of law and legal processes and their role in national development. It also aims to develop in the students and research scholars a sense of responsibility to serve society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation and reforms in the existing laws. National Law Institute University, Bhopal is situated in the sylvan surroundings of Bhopal.
Teaching Methodology at NLIU Bhopal
- The University follows a trimester system for the B.A. LLB (Hons.) programme and the year is divided into three trimesters of about 70 working days each
- The Masters programme provides specialization in Human Rights Law, Business Law, Criminal Law, Intellectual Property and Business Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law. In each trimester students are taught four core courses and at least two skill courses like Legal Writing, Research Methodology, Accountancy etc
- In the final year, along with compulsory subjects, students can choose their own optional courses
- In each trimester, a student has to undergo mid-term and end-term examinations, along with project work (written and presentation) in each paper as well as viva-voce examination
- The faculty prepares extensive teaching material, which is revised and updated regularly to aid the lectures. Classroom teaching is supplemented with moot court competitions, client counselling skills and training in language and computer proficiency

Facilities at NLIU
Hostels – There are separate hostel facilities provided by the University for boys and girls with single or double occupancy rooms. Apart from basic facilities there are other facilities like - common recreation rooms and high speed wireless internet connectivity. The university also has campus residential facility for the teachers.
Gyan Mandir - Gyan Mandir is the name of the Library which is housed in a centrally air conditioned building. It has a rich collection of learned tomes, national and international journals of law, humanities and social sciences. A large collection of e-resources like Lexis Nexis, Hein Online, JSTOR, Manupatra, AIR, SCC, and other materials are also available.
Internet - The entire University campus has wireless internet facility.
Computer Laboratory - University has an air-conditioned computer laboratory, having 120 computers with 1 GBPS internet speed.
Canteen – the University has a modern and well furnished canteen on the campus
Scholarships – NLIU provided few scholarships and fellowships.
Some of these are:
- Merit cum Means Scholarships one in the memory of Justice J. S. Verma and the other in the name of the University. The scholarships cover full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) In the first year of the course the scholarships are awarded to the NLIU students securing highest marks in CLAT. From second year to fifth year the scholarships are awarded to the students securing highest marks (without repeat) in the NLIU examinations of first year, second year, third year and fourth year. To be eligible for the award of the scholarships merit alone is not sufficient to make a student eligible for the award. The annual income of the parents of the students should not exceed the amount as may be prescribed by the university from time to time
- Junior and Senior Research Fellowships awarded to the Ph.D. students of NLIU under the Schemes of Ministry of Human Resource Development, and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India
MCA - NLIU has a Moot Court Association (MCA) an elected body of students comprising of successful and experienced mooters. NLIU organizes three Moot Court competition annually i.e. the i) NLIU-Juris Corp National Corporate Law, Justice R. K. Tankha Memorial International Moot Court Competition, ii) Surana and Surana Trial Advocacy Moot, North India Rounds and iii) Surana Trial Advocacy Moot, North India Rounds. Other moot court competitions are organised from time to time. NLIU also hosting NLIU-INADR International mediation competition annually.
Annual Lectures - NLIU organizes annually Justice Shacheendra Dwivedi Memorial Lecture, Justice G. P Singh Memorial Lecture and special regional and global conferences on contemporary topics.
Academic Exchange Program - NLIU has an understanding with the renowned Centre for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP), Seattle, U.S.A. for Academic Exchange Program. Two students attend the summer course at Washington University, Seattle every year. CASRIP provides to these students scholarships to attend the program. NLIU provides a scholarship of Rs. 30,000/- each to the scholar students
Rajiv Gandhi National Cyber Law Centre - A Centre of Excellence in Cyber Law has been established by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India. It has been established to deal with new and critical issues relating to various aspects of cyberspace. The Centre houses a Conference hall, along with several air conditioned classrooms with audio visual facility and a library tailor made for research in this particular field.
Computer Centre - The University has a computer laboratory equipped with the latest genre of computers and internet facilities. In addition, high speed wireless fidelity network provides students with internet access throughout the campus.
Auditorium – The University auditorium is a 300 seater one and is used for various seminars, workshops, cultural programmes, moot competitions and the annual convocation of the University.
Sports Complex - The University provides facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. There are facilities for sports and games like - pool, billiards, snooker, table tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, and tennis amongst other sports. There is also a sports complex with a gymnasium consisting of equipment for physical fitness and health of the students.
Health Care Centre - The centre provides medical facilities for the students and staff members. A duly qualified staff and proper stock of medicines have been ensured by the University for the well- being of the students.
Guest House – There is a fully furnished guesthouse meant for the guests of the university. It also houses a large conference room with audio-visual facilities.
PCC - The Placement Coordination Committee (PCC) provides transparent, credible and accountable interface between prospective employers and graduating students. The PCC is also engaged in coordinating internships for the students.
Other activities include:
- Weekly round-table conferences for the graduating batch chaired by a guest lecturer or a faculty member
- Maintaining a catalogue of recent developments in the field of law to generate awareness amongst students.
- Organising workshops and seminars conducted by various luminaries who help the students in preparing themselves for the placement process, facing interview boards, résumé writing as well as for higher studies.
- Organising regular career counselling and group discussion programme for the graduating batch
