About National Institute of Technology - NIT Jamshedpur
National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur was originally founded as Regional Institute of Technology in 1960 by Dr. Srikrishna Sinha, the then chief minister of Bihar with the aim of nurturing talent and setting high standards of education and excellence. Having been a freedom fighter himself, he chose the auspicious day of 15th August, 1960 to lay the foundation stone. Later upgraded to National Institute of Technology on 27th December, 2002, with the status of a Deemed University, it is now totally under the control of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, New Delhi since 1st April, 2003. The Institute offers courses in engineering and basic sciences at the undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level. The Institute has several departments in various disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized on a unique pattern of functioning. The annual system of the curricula has been changed to semester system. The courses have been completely restructured and prepared as per the needs of society and industries. It is situated in the heart of the rich mineral and industrial belt of Jharkhand State which also happens to be surrounded by giant and medium scale industries like Tata-Steel, Telco, Indian Steel Wire Products, Tata Tubes, Tinplate Company, Tata Timken etc. and reputed Institutes like the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Xavier Labour Relations Institute and National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology, Ranchi. This places the University in a strategic position in terms of Training and Placement.

Facilities
Hostels - There are 11 Hostels in the University, 9 for boys and 2 for girls. They are provided with wi-fi and LAN connections. Each Hostel has its own Mess and Common Room, where residents can watch television which has connections of DTH service either of Dish TV or Tata Sky, and read magazines and newspaper.
Library - The Library is composed of three stories and is situated adjacent to the Administrative Block of the Institute. It spans a total floor space of about 32,184 sq. feet, consisting of a separate Reading Hall, Periodical section, a Processing Section, Stack Room, Book Bank and a Binding Unit. The Library subscribes to a sizeable number of technical, scientific & general periodicals journal & newspapers for the students and faculty members of the Institute. There are two Book Banks in the Library. One of them is meant for the students belonging to scheduled cast (SC) & Scheduled Tribe (ST). The other Book Bank is TEQIP Book Bank, used by both SC/ST students and General students.
Total number of the books in the as of 2006 the Library has a collection of books in the below mentioned sections:

Computer Centre - One of the attractions of the University campus is the Oval structure. The structure accommodates central computing facilities. There are mainly three types of services viz. computational services, laboratory services and network services. The Centre's services are extensively used by the students, faculty and staff members of the Institute. The centre is equipped with IBM-Netfinity 5500, SUN Microsystems Ultra Sparc and HCL Infinity Global Line 2765 XD Servers. Various systems and application softwares are installed and maintained by the centre. There are three PC Laboratories, which are used for UG/PG classes and one for Internet services. The internet service is available through VSAT on all week days from 08:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The network services are limited to the centre, but it is to be extended to the whole academic and residential campus shortly.
Bus Service - The University runs a bus service, thrice a day from the college bus stand to Gopal Maidan at Bishtupur and vice-versa. It has three other stoppages at Nit Main gate, Gate four, Adityapur colony, All India Radio (Adityapur) respectively.
Bank and Post Office - Institute has the RIT (Regional Institute of Technology) Branch of State Bank of India within its premises with special counters to be availed by the staff and students of NIT, Jamshedpur. The RIT (Regional Institute of Technology) Post Office is also located within the campus which staff and students can avail for all type of postal services.
Laboratories - Every Department of the University has it's own separate Laboratories.

Central Store - The Central Store is situated in a corner of the main building. It takes care of the needs of the staff and students as diverse as stationery, packed food products and toiletries equally.
Extra Curricular Activities
- CDS - Cultural and Dramatics Society covers all the talents fields of acting, singing (eastern and western), dance, instruments and anchoring. The main event of CDS, is the cultural fest, Utkarsh.
- FACES - Fine Arts Club for Engineering Students consists of cornucopia of students specialized in various art forms, namely, sketching, painting, junkart, thermocol modelling, paper cutting, collage, cartooning, etc.
- LDS - Literary & Debating Society recruits and fosters budding talent from all the four years of the University. Whether it be quizzing, jamming or creative writing, any or all skills are recognized in this society.
- Soft Skills Society - The society conducts speech skills sessions, seminars and workshops on GD, HR interviews and other soft skills related topics throughout the year in order to help the students in placement process.
- Formula SAE - The Formula SAE team from NIT Jamshedpur (under the banner of Drift Racing Team) is a group of budding engineers from different engineering backgrounds who are continuously working hard in order to develop new and innovative technologies that can be incorporated in the Automotive Industry. Formula SAE is an international student design competition conducted by The Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE). It is considered the world’s greatest engineering competition, in which more than 250 universities from across the world participate .The event is organized in many different countries round the year that includes Australia, UK, Germany, USA, Italy, Brazil, and Japan. This event is also scheduled to be held in India in January 2011.
- Sports - There is an athletic ground, a cricket ground in the campus. Apart from this, each of the hostels are provided with equipments of various sports like Table Tennis, Lawn tennis, cricket, football, badminton, carom, chess, etc.
- Engineer's Adventure Club - This club was started way back in 1989-90 at the behest of Mrs. Bachendri Pal. Some of the regular activities of EAC are to arrange training programs for rock climbing, mountaineering and trekking.
- NSS - National Service Scheme has been introduced for the students of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester. All the students of these semesters have been divided into Five Units of NSS (Unit-I to U nit-V), each Unit is divided into five teams (Teams-1 to Team-25).
Guest House - The Guest House has well furnished rooms made available to people visiting the college on request.
Training and Placement - The Training and Placement Department provides facilities to different companies to conduct paper-pencil as well as online tests and interviews for Campus Recruitment for the final year students. A large number of students were placed in core as well as software industries. The year 2008-09 witnessed an upsurge in the Placement of the students as the percentage of B.Tech. Students selected was approximately 93%. The campus Recruitment Process typically starts from July and continues till May of the next year for the students of U.G. and P.G. for the academic session 200edged contact with the past students of NIT, Jamshedpur and increases meaningful interaction between student-alumni and faculty-alumni on a sustained basis for mutual benefit.
Achievements
Under UNICEF project, a See-Saw operated water pump for nearby rural schools has been developed by Department of Mechanical Engineering which is working satisfactorily.
