About National Institute of Technology - NIT Durgapur

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Institute is a Deemed University which awards B.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc., M.B.A., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. As of August 2007 NIT Durgapur has been declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act (before 2005 it was controlled by WBUT), and thus enabling it and other NITs to become centres of excellence like IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology). As decided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the procedure for selection of candidates for admission to the Bachelor Degree Courses in Engineering/Technology in National Institute of Technology Durgapur and in other NITs is on the basis of State Rank/ All India Rank (AIR) of AIEEE conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, and the same is executed through counselling by Central Counselling Board, AIEEE under guidance from MHRD, GOI as per schedule notified by CCB. In addition to the normal intake, a few seats are reserved for Foreign Students who are nominated by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Government of India. The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 2500 boys and 500 girls reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is about 700 students.

Facilities

Residential Facilities - National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is a residential Institute. There are seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate the admitted students. Most of the teachers and the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the Institute. A modern Guest House beside the Director's Bungalow extends hospitality to the guests of the Institute. In the middle of the residential area there is a Shopping Complex which meets the daily requirement of the residents. The Institute Guest House standing beside the Director's Bungalow serves to render hospitality to the Official and Non-official guests of the Institute. It is a unique double storied building with modern living facilities overlooking a beautiful garden and tall sal trees all around. The guests of faculty members and students are also accommodated there with advanced booking as per availability.

Canteen - A canteen for the students and the staff is located near the main academic building and there is a second canteen at the rear exit of the main academic building of the Institute.

Library - It is housed in a separate building having three floors on a plinth area of 1000sq. mtrs.

  • The library has a collection of 1.2 lac volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books & Bound vols. of Journals, Standards etc. The Library subscribes to about 180 current Journals. Library operations have been automated with the help of an integrated library software package, LIBSYS-4. The book database is accessible through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). Circulation Services are executed through Barcode System.
  • It has a good collection of Electronic resources in its Digital Library. It is an open access library and remains open from 8:30a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Library has introduced wi-fi Internet facility inside it to facilitate free-flow of information to the users.
  • The library is an institutional member of DELNET (Developing Library Network), American Center Library, Kolkata, NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), and Current Science Association, Bangalore.
  • It is also a beneficiary Member of INDEST-AICTE (Indian National Digital Library in Engineering, Science & Technology) Consortium, which provides Desktop Access to high quality e-resources (online journals) like IEL Online (IEEE/IEE Electronic Library), Springer Verlag’s Link, Proquest, ACM journals, ASCE, ASME, Nature Magazine, Indian Standards (Intranet version)and ASTM journals & Standards etc. It has a good collection of Learning Resources. It has also a collection of several thousand E-Books on Computer Science.

Central Instruments Facilities - XRD Equipment: PANalytical XPert Pro Basic X-ray Powder Diffraction Package with all accessories and soft wares. Offers Defect studies of Metallic Alloys including Rietveld Analysis, Phase Analysis, Chemical Analysis for both inorganic and organic specimen, Micro-structural Parameters. Compatible for samples of solid flat specimens, solid powders, liquid specimen, thin films etc. SEM with EDS Equipment: SEM: S-3000N, HITACHI-JAPAN, EDS : THERMO-NORAN-USA, SIX-NSS 200 with PC Monitor, Softwares etc. Offers morphological and surface studies of Metallic Alloys, semi-conducting, insulating and biological samples. Chemical analysis, Phase analysis, X-ray mapping etc. on the EDS.     

High Voltage Laboratory - It is mandatory as per the guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) that the laboratory facilities are to be provided for the programs which are offered by the colleges. But very few colleges have high voltage and High Power Laboratory facilities due to the involvement of huge costs and availability of specialised faculty members as well as skilled staffs in the field of High voltage and High Power Engineering. Approximately three hundred of the eight hundred colleges in India offer undergraduate programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering that include High Voltage Engineering.  NIT-Durgapur is one of the six Institutes that boasts of the advanced High-Voltage Laboratory.

Computer Centre - The Institute has a Computer Centre as a central computing facility for the students, scholars and the teachers of the Institute. The Centre has necessary infrastructure like sufficient number of Computer Hardware and Software,air-conditioned space and stabilized uninterrupted power supply as well as trained technical manpower.In addition, the Institute has developed two state-of-art CAD Laboratories to train the students on Computer Aided Design.

I.T. Facilities - Each academic department has its own Computer Laboratory with a sizeable number of PCs and Workstations running specialised engineering and scientific packages, like MATLAB, AUTOCad, STADD, IDEAS, PSpice, ANSYS, AFS, Sybase and PowerBuilder. The whole Institute including the Students' Hostels and the residential area of the Faculty is connected by a campus wide LAN using high speed Fibre Optic/UTP cables. The LAN is managed by High Level Switches and a host of Servers. The Switches are connected by Fibre Optic Cables to Switches located in different academic departments, students' hostels and residential areas of the Institute. The Switches cater to a whole lot of nodes in different locations as mentioned. In addition to this, the Administrative Offices and the Library have separate local networks running Windows Server. The Library is fully computerised using LibSys software. The Institute has a dedicated 54 Mbps (34 Mbps BSNL+ 20 Mbps Reliance Comm) 24X7 Internet Connectivity, which serves the Institute Internet needs.

Health Care - There is a Medical Unit-cum-Hospital with arrangement for both indoor and outdoor treatment of the patients. The medical unit is served by two resident doctors and other medical staff round the clock. The students and the staff with their family members are benefited by the services of the Medical Unit. For any specialised treatment the patients are referred to the State Government Hospital situated at the other end of the city, or some Advanced Medical Centre.

Banks and Post Office - Also there is a branch of State Bank of India, a branch of Canara Bank and a Post-Office within the Institute Campus.

School - A model co-educational higher secondary school has been set up for the wards of the employees of the Institute.

Students' Gymkhana - The Students' Gymkhana of the Institute provides opportunity to the students for organising various co-curricular activities of the Institute. The Gymkhana has its own constitution and functions through its Executive Council and Sub-Committees. The Director is its ex-officio Patron. All the sports and cultural activities of the college are organised by the Students' Gymkhana. Election for the Executive Council of the Gymkhana for new session is held in November/December every year.

Extra Curricular Activities - These are :

  1. CCA - Centre for Cognitive Activities (CCA), is the technical gymkhana of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur. This elite club has upon its shoulders the responsibility to create awareness amongst the students regarding science and emerging trends in this technical society. The club organizes most of the technical extracurricular activities within the campus all round the year with a view to widen the horizons of the students, especially the new entrants, and provide them with a platform to showcase their technical skills and interact with experts.  
  2. Recstacy - "RECSTACY", as the name suggests, is four days of unadulterated ecstacy at NIT Durgapur. This annual youth festival of the Institute is organised by the Students' Union of the Institute. After a hectic academic schedule all through the year, the students look forward to these four days of absolute fun 'n frolic. The oval ground, the venue for Recstacy, is rife all night long with throng of students enjoying to the hilt. Ex-students working in prestigious organisations all over the globe try to relive the memories of their exciting college-days by responding to almamater's call during the fest time. The festival not only brings together all NITians but also students from different colleges of eastern India.
  3. Maths & Tech. Club - Established in the year 2004, the Maths 'N' Tech Club was initially conceived with the idea of providing a stage for the elite in the field of mathematics who shared an equal passion for defining technology. The faculty members of the Mathematics Department ably guided a bunch of talented individuals who together dared to tap into the mathematical proficiency of the students of this college. The need of the hour was to provide students a forum for testing out themselves several times before exams like CAT, GATE and also for the campus placements and with this kicked off events which were engineered specifically for these tests.
  4. AAROHAN - It signifies ascent to glory. This techno-scientific extravaganza is envisioned to fulfil many aims - To inculcate scientific temperament and attitude among the students, to provide an atmosphere conducive to generate new ideas and innovations, to create a platform for engineering students from all across the country to interact and exchange ideas and to establish a vibrant industry-institute interaction.
  5. LUG - Linux Users' Group, NIT Durgapur was formed to popularize Linux and Open Source software's beyond the silicon branches and to the masses in common. It triggers certification courses on Linux, Java and other technologies, along with seminars and tutorials.
  6. Mukti - LUG organizes an annual national level technical symposium on Linux and FOSS called "MUKTI", to provide a platform for students, nationwide, to share their knowledge and intellect.
  7. Chayanika - The Chayanika is the Art and Music Club under which the students express their creative talents in the fields of painting, artwork of various forms and Indian classical, traditional and modern vocal and instrumental music.
  8. Literary Circle - The LC is not about literature alone. It has many unspoken responsibilities to live up to. The all round development of character is often bandied about but no one is quite sure of how to go about it. We at the Literary Circle have decided to give this segment a crack.It is not easy but we have decided that it is worth all the brickbats to delve into this mire.
  9. NSS - The National Service Scheme, NIT Durgapur was formed in 1973 and since then, the students of our college have been rendering valuable voluntary services to the society through various social welfare projects. The basic aim of such activities of the students is to work for the cause of the poor.
  10. Quiz Corp - The Quiz Club of the Institute is the forum under which the students practise and organize various quizzing and debating activities.
  11. Music Club - The music lovers and potential techno-musicians of the society very often spend their evenings at the Music Club in the first floor of the Activity Centre, rehearsing on the rare tunes, both Western and Indian. They enthral the audience when they perform during the Annual Cultural Festival of the Institute or any other occasion.

NITDAA - The National Institute of Technology Durgapur Alumni Association (NITDAA) act as a forum of human interaction for the Alumni of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur and their dependent Children.
