About Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya

Gurukul Kangri University, also known as Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya was founded on March 4, 1902 by  Swami Shraddhanandaji with the sole aim to revive the ancient Indian Gurukula System of education, on the bank of Ganges at a distance of about 6 km. from Hardwar and about 200 km. from Delhi. This institution was established with the objective of providing an indigenous alternative to Lord Macaly's education policy by imparting education in the areas of vedic literature, Indian philosophy, Indian culture, modern sciences and research. Arya Samaj has been advocating women's education since the day it was founded. As part of its policies for the up-liftment of women in the country, Kanya Gurukula Mahavidyalaya, Dehradun was established in 1922 by Acharya Ramdevji as a second campus of women's education. To give real shape to the dreams of Swami Shraddhanandaji, a new campus for women's education, Kanya Gurukula Mahavidyalaya, Hardwar was established in 1993 for PG classes for girls. It was given the status of Deemed to be University in 1962 by University Grants Commission. The Vishwavidyalaya is a Registered autonomous institute and offers 20 UG courses and 17 PG courses in different disciplines. Research facility leading to degree of Ph.D. is available in areas like Vedic literature, Sanskrit literature, Philosophy, Hindi, English, Psychology, Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology, Computer Sciences and Management Studies. All the degrees conferred by Vishwavidyalaya are recognized by GOI/UGC.

Facilities

Gurukula Library - It is comprised of 2336 books consisting of very authentic books on Education, History, Biographies, Veda and Sanskrit subject in the year 1907, which rose to 5500 in the year 1911. 14 volumes of Encyclopaedia Britannica were among its important collection at that time.

Computer Facility - The computer centre of the Engineering Faculty where latest servers of IBM-X series provides networking facilities to 73 workstation in which most are latest P-IV of IBM. The Centre is properly networked. Centre has various systems as well as application softwares. Centre provides facility of Internet connectivity using 2Mbps(1:4) bandwidth from Reliance Infocomm. 30 latest machines in Electronics and Communication Engineering, 15 latest machines in Electrical Engineering and 30 latest Configuration machines are also available in Computer Science & Engineering project labs.

Gurukula Kangri Pharmacy - It is an ISO-9001 company and is a pioneer Indian consumer goods company with interests in health care, personal care and ayurvedic products.

IQAC - Internal Quality Assurance Cell acts as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure. The prime task of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of institutions.

Laboratory Facility - Well Equipped laboratories are available with the Engineering Faculty namely Advance Electronic Lab, Digital Electronics Lab, Communication Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Microwave Engineering Lab, LIC/ IC Lab, Basic Electrical Engineering Lab, Basic Electrical Machine Lab, Advance Electrical Machine Lab, Control & Instrumentation Lab, Mechanical workshop Drawing Lab, Physics Lab and Chemistry Lab.

Archaeological Museum - Its 'Archaeological Museum', (estb. 1945)  houses some rare statues, coins, paintings, manuscripts and artefacts, starting from Harappa culture (c.2500-1500 BC).  It is a postgraduate and Research department. Since its inception, the department has produced so many scholars, of national and international repute well versed in Sanskrit, who contributed significantly in the studies of Ancient Indian History and culture and the history of Southeast Asian countries. To name a few, Acharya Ram Deva, Chandragupta Vedalankar and Jayachandra Vidyalankar, Haridatta Vedalankar, Satyaketu Vidyalankar are among those historians who made immemorial contribution by writing number of books on various aspects of Ancient history and culture of India with their original. The Museum is running different Courses - (i) Ph.D. (ii) Postgraduate Studies ( 2 years Master of Arts), and (iii) Under Graduate Course ( (i) History (ii) Museology and Archaeology (iii) Indian Culture - Compulsory subject for Vidyalankar students)  independent views.

Other Facilities - Both indoor and outdoor facilities of sports are available like Table-Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, Cricket, Basket Ball etc. Engineering students represent in good number in university team for Inter-university tournaments in these sports.

Placement - Increasing Industrial and Service establishments in India , strong and consistent growth in India GDP has increased the demand for Indian professionals. he companies listed in “Fortune-500 Companies”, continues to hunt talent from here. Withholding its Gurukul approach of teaching, Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya is running many professional courses like MCA, MBA, M.Sc., B.Tech etc in addition to its conventional courses. With the sincere efforts of University Placement Cell Some of the major companies who have been associated with us are TCS, Libsys, AVL Technologies etc.

Achievements

  • National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) has awarded four star status to the Vishwavidyalaya in 2002.
  • Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya is a pride member of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities.
  • The campus has also been visited by British Trade Union leader Charles Freer Andrews and British Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, to study the unique Gurukul based education system. Mahatma Gandhi visited the campus three times during his lifetime. Swami Shraddhanand, till now know as Mahatma Munshiram took sanyas, left Gurukul to jump full fledged into Hindu reform movement and Indian Independence movemen. Other distinguished guests include Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr Radha Krishnan, Jamnalal Bajaj,Dr. Munje, Sadhu Vaswani,Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi and Gyani Jail Singh.
