Master of Surgery in Ayurveda (M.S. (Ayurveda) Course Duration
M.S. Ayurveda or Master of Surgery in Ayurveda is a postgraduate Medical course. It deals with the diagnosis of various surgical disorders, surgical techniques, trauma and surgical emergency management etc. Surgery in Ayurveda is a system of traditional practices which utilize both the traditional and modern surgical techniques for surgery. The academic study of this ancient form of medicine is traditionally known as Ayurveda Dhanwantri or M.S. (Ayu) which is an abbreviated form of Master of Surgery in Ayurveda. To be precise it is known as Ayurveda Dhanwantri - Shalya Tantra – Samanya. The course is known as Mahir-e-Jarahat which is an Arabic Term for Master of Surgery in Ayurved. It is offered by Aligarh Muslim University (A.K. Tibbiya College). The Course is of 3 years duration divided into a number of semesters. The Course structure is the combination of both the integrated systems of modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda. A person who successfully completes the course becomes Shalya Chikitaka i.e. English equivalent of Surgeon.
Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) was created in March 1995 and re-named as Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in November, 2003 with a view to providing focused attention to development of Education & Research in Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems. Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) is the statutory regulatory body constituted under IMCC Act 1970 regulating the Ayurveda education at degree level as well as at PG level as well as the practice of Ayurvedic medicine in India. The syllabus and curriculum for each specialty is uniform throughout the country and is being conducted only in Ayurvedic Medical Colleges affiliated to universities and only after getting prior permission from Dept. of AYUSH, Union Govt. of India to start the course/undertake the admissions.
Master of Surgery in Ayurveda (M.S. (Ayurveda) Eligibility
- Candidates should have passed a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Degree, recognised by CCIM. One must have completed a 12-month rotating internship (4 1/2 years BAMS course) or 6 months rotating internship (five years BAMS course).
- Those who have an MBBS degree, recognized by the Medical Council of India are also eligible for M.S. (Ayu) Course.
- A Candidate should not be more than 35 years of age. Age Criteria may vary as per an institute’s regulation.
