Several colleges are introducing short-time and graduation courses in the specialized medical technology and management of the healthcare sector. This has been done to boost the growing demand in the path labs, hospital management, and other technical departments.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore has started one year course in Hospital Management focusing on case studies and industry insights, for enhancing the learners' core management skills, which in turn will help them design and deliver high-impact hospital services.

The IIM-B spokesperson says, "The medical field's talent gap has to be bridged by providing regular and relevant training to medical professionals. They have to be skilled, upskilled in quality management education of healthcare sector, along with strong involvement in public policy, public systems, and public health.'

Mentioning the course module is aligned with the sectoral needs, the spokesperson adds, "In India, over 80% of healthcare is delivered, not by corporate chains in metro cities, but by 30 bed and 50-bed nursing homes in Tier II and Tier III cities. With this course, the high quality of training is assured. The course module weaves healthcare topics into wide business aspects, taught by IIMB's renowned faculty. Besides online classes, workshops, hands-on projects, and talks from industry experts are also an important part of the curriculum."

As the last step of completing the course, learners will have to work on a capstone project, which is a combined evaluation of earnings from all the individual topics, and pass it. "The course is also needed for the overall development of the healthcare industry. Doctors running in nursing homes need serious help in management and administration of healthcare services," further adds the spokesperson.

Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU), Delhi has added five new paramedical courses this year. To offer hands-on training to the students, the courses will be run in collaboration with the industry players.

The courses include BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology, Emergency Medical Technology, and Dialysis Technology. This also includes a BBA in Optometry and Hospital Management, which are four-year courses that include one year of internship.

The courses will equip students with emerging healthcare technology along with giving them training in handling the equipment. The aim is to produce a highly-skilled workforce in the coming years. VES College of Arts, Science & Commerce (VESASC), Mumbai, has introduced a short-term diploma in Medical Laboratory technology that will make students employable in pathology or medical laboratories.

BSc in Emerging Medical Technologies and Dialysis Technology courses offered at the Centre for Healthcare, Allied Medical, and Paramedical Sciences, are curated after serious discussion with industry experts and then rolled out in partnership with Apollo Med Skills Limited.

"Students are trained in medical labs to perform tests for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases by acquiring expertise in using specialized equipment. The exposure to equipment handling will help them to generate or read data needed for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment," says Neharika Vohra, vice chancellor of DSEU.

In India, 80% of blindness and vision-related problems can be prevented by providing primary eye care. "There is demand for skilled Op optometrists in India and the course will help in creating workers to fill

the gap," says Vohra, highlighting the importance of BBA (Optometry). The course is offered in collaboration with Lenskart and the students will undertake the mandatory one-year internship at Lenskart's stores located across the country, she adds.

Hospital management is a crucial subject that needs to be handled by a skilled team. However, in most hospitals, senior doctors are burdened with management duties. BBA (Hospital Management) will help in supporting the hospitals with skilled managers, adds Vohra. The course module covers every aspect related to technology management knowledge along with supply chain management in hospitals. "It will prepare students to take charge of various departments including general administration, healthcare finance management, quality control, and more," adds Vohra.

Santini Nair, vice principal, VESASC Mumbai says that the newly inducted PG diploma courses aim at providing technical expertise to students for managing and adapting to several innovative equipment including automated analyzers and coagulometers. "These students will be a part of the future healthcare workforce, and to bridge the talent gap, they also have to be trained in professional ethics as well as soft skills to be employed at pathology laboratories or in related jobs at hospitals or clinics," she says. The 15-month course with three-month compulsory internships with DNB/MD pathologists or pathology laboratories of clinical diagnostic corporate companies will help the students.
